The Court of Venice, at Piazzale Roma
For residents of Venice or Mestre the competent court is, as a rule, the Court of Venice. It sits in the Cittadella della Giustizia at Piazzale Roma: the civil division, which handles separation, divorce and custody, is in buildings 10, 11, 14 and 15. From Mestre you get there by tram or by train, a few minutes' walk from Santa Lucia station.
You do not always end up in court, though. Where there is an agreement, separation and divorce are concluded between the two lawyers through assisted negotiation; and with no minor or dependent children, and no transfer of assets, directly at the town hall. At the first consultation we tell you which route is yours.

Where is the firm's office in Mestre?

Which court has jurisdiction if I live in Venice or Mestre?
Usually the Court of Venice. Where there are minor children, what matters most is where they live, and if one spouse has moved things can change: at the first consultation we check which court applies to your case.
Can I separate at the town hall, without going to court?
Yes, if there are no minor children, no adult children who are dependent or seriously disabled, and the agreement involves no transfer of assets. You go to the registrar of the municipality where either spouse lives or where the marriage was registered. Otherwise the routes are assisted negotiation or the court.
I live outside Venice, for example elsewhere in the province: can you help me?
Yes. The first consultation can take place in Mestre even if the proceedings will be before another court. Once jurisdiction is established, we tell you how we will handle the case and what that involves.

What should I bring to the first consultation?
Whatever you have: the marriage certificate, both spouses' latest tax returns if available, documents for the home, any agreements or court orders already signed. If something is missing, that's fine: we tell you what is needed and in what order.
